Dear Brave Soul, you inspire me to sing! If you’re new, thank you. 🙏🏼 We’re here to share stories, songs, and support for our authentic (even weird!) creative voices. Today’s spontaneous Siren Song was created, on the spot, in my first live solo video. No rehearsal.
For International Women’s Day, I offer the joy of singing from my heart.
An imperfect human, following my soul, doing what I love most, and sharing my song with you. As women, our voices matter. Our expression is our resistance in a world that often seeks to shut us down. As a white woman of privilege, I acknowledge the steep barriers other women face. And I believe it’s vital to share what matters most.
Why I sing improv: the Joys of Being Real - and Imperfect
With improvisation, we learn to trust ourselves, each other, and the moment. Our brains’ synapses light up more than any other activity. As a student of jazz and gospel, plus over a decade of sharing Bobby McFerrin’s CircleSongs in community, it’s my favorite art form. Everyone lights up with so much joy!
I love to share my daily practice of singing for water and Mama Nature.
In future live videos, I’ll invite you to hum, snap, tap, or sing along (sadly, the background vocals I’d recorded for you to sing along refused to play on my speaker). Why singing? Your voice matters now more than ever.
Celebrating International Women’s Day
The IWD theme this year is to Accelerate Action for gender equality. Whew! Big topic. Yet, many hands make light work. I’m continually defining what activism looks like for me. Some are called to be warriors on the front lines. I support the social-emotional wellbeing of women and girls, especially through creative healing (as a child of trauma), voice empowerment, and Supporting the Supporters, too.
However you choose to show up, I applaud you. 👏🏼
It’s a seriously weird time when social advances and empathetic governance are being rolled back. I’m grateful for the many ways we lift each other’s voices. It’s how women are wired: to connect, to collaborate, and to cooperate.
I’m grateful to Laura Durban, Claire Venus ✨ Georgia, Lauren Barber, Lyndsay Kaldor, Laurita Gorman | Therapist SEP and Emma Simpson for joining together in honor of SIREN SONGS: celebrating women’s voices on Substack.
🗣️ Your turn: Tell me about your international women friends. How do they inspire you? How do you feel about gender equality these days? Do you feel called to show up? In what ways?
Thank you for being (Mostly) Brave, and for being You. 💗 Please like this post, comment, or share with a friend who wants to express her brave voice. More to come,
