How to Create Your Own Flow. Literally.
Making Circles in the Sand, sharing a joyful day in community
Dear Brave Soul, as I sat down to write about flow, I saw someone making a flowing work of art on the beach! I introduced myself to Steve, and joined his “Circles in the Sand” project, making a delightful, swirling path for others to explore. Enjoy this experience of making flow…
Feeling the flow of song, as I explored his sandy swirls. Ahhh…
Making Circles in the Sand
My new friend Steve spent a weekend making sand art with Labyrinth artist, Denny Dyke in Bandon, Oregon. Dykes calls his walkable ephemeral art scapes “Dreamfield Labyrinths.” The intention of Circles in the Sand is to share love, joy, and kindness. Teams create sand labyrinths surrounded by intricate designs and artwork.1
Today, Steve decided to make his first “draw,” with his family. And me.
Getting into the Flow
A lifelong artist, Steve masterminded the shape, the flow of the maze. The team brought lightweight adjustable rakes to draw the flowing outer edges of each path.
Texturizing
The team uses crosshatching to break the sand into textures like apple crisp topping.
Creating areas of focus
Steve’s wife Patty and her sister made delightful additions around the labyrinth.
Exploring the Maze
Beachwalkers passing by discover the fun of joining the flow, even as it’s being made.
Anyone can help. Use anything you have.
We made small altars or mandalas from beach trash, shells, anything.
The final labyrinth - just before the tide washed it all away
What a beautiful way to feel in the Flow!
Walking this flowing labyrinth on a gorgeous sunny day brought me to that state of wonder and the simple joy of being alive. In the Flow. Ahh… I wish the same for you.
🗣️ Enjoy your day, finding your flow — or making a path that flows.
Thank you for joining me on this joyful adventure 💗 More to come,
All about Circles in the Sand project
@Christine Ahh— what a beautiful, joyful piece this is! I smiled all the way through it. A maze that flows, changes, invites — then gives itself back to the sea. There is such a gentle wisdom in this. And how wonderful to witness how the process matters as much as the result — raking, texturing, adding found elements, inviting strangers in. A true community moment, playful and deep indeed. Thank you for sharing this glimpse — I feel lighter already, as if my feet have wandered through those sandy paths alongside yours. 🌊✨
